Unit Editions
Natasha Day of Unit Editions just wants to let us know about their latest publication Unit: Design/Research 01, a newspaper format, and an anthology of Folkways album cover art featuring the work of Ronald Clyne. Looks quite interesting.
Nobody Beats The Drum
Hectic soundtrack, but this stop frame animation is quite something. A music video for Nobody Beats The Drum from Director/animator Rogier van der Zwaag.
"This sequence of 4085 photo’s was patiently created in one room with more than 300 wooden blocks over a period of 3 months."
Watch the humourous making of here.

Thomas Matthews sustainable identity
Quite an interesting and clever identity concept created for and by Thomas Matthews design group, that speaks true of their own design ethos, the work aims to dispell the myths associated with sustainable printing and making the best of leftover materials....

Jeff Bridges
I know we've already had a glut of photography, however having just watched Crazy Heart, I thought you may be interested to snoop through some of Jeff Bridge's photographs, most of which have been taken on a 35mm WideLux panoramic camera with a 28mm lens. The format alone is interesting, but if you're into your film, then you'll appreciate the content too.
Mass Market: Nike
Quite a good spot for Nike created by Mass Market and Wieden + Kennedy Portland. Watch it here.

W+K Nominated
Talking of Awards I received an email from Bella Laine at Wieden + Kennedy London, to let us know that they have been nominated for this year’s Design Museum Brit Insurance Awards in the for the creation of the 2009 / 2010 onedotzero festival identity, which we featured back in September. Take a look at their submission film on the creation of the interactive identity piece.
2010 Design Awards at the Design Museum
Ok back to a bit of design, first off, just to to let you know that the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year is now open at the Design Museum. You can now see the 91 nominated designs in all seven categories, and the winner will be announced on March 16. Here's a quick glimpse of the show.
Lacey
Well its been a long week of photographic snippets so far, and so the last photographer that I'd like to feature for now, is an ultra talented friend of mine by the name of Lacey, a fantastic stills and fashion photographer, who started life as a graphic designer no less. She studied at the respected London College of Communication (known then as London College of Printing), and went on to set up her own studio in East London.
Lacey is represented by Webber, and has worked for a number of notable fashion magazines as well as gained a very healthy collection of commercial clients, and no wonder, as she clearly applies a wonderful element of creativity to her accomplished work.
To keep up with her latest projects, take a trip over to her blog.
PS. Happy Birthday Lacey!

Photographic diaries: Hedi Slimane
Ok let's snoop through a few diaries. First off, Hedi Slimane's diary.
The Deutsche Börse photography prize
Guardian critic, Adrian Searle, dissects this year's contenders for the biggest photography prize in the world. Anna Fox, Zoe Leonard, Sophie Ristelhueber and Donovan Wylie are all up for the £30,000 award, given annually to a photographer who has made a significant contribution to European photography. Read about this over at The Guardian.
Eve Arnold
So far, all male photographers, so let's talk about Eve Arnold, who, incidentally, is to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Sony World Photography Awards.
Eve Arnold was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Russian immigrant parents. She began photographing while working at a photo-finishing plant in New York City in 1946. In 1954, Arnold's fresh quality and intelligent choice of subject matter brought her to the attention of Robert Capa, the head of Magnum Photos, the prestigious international cooperative of photographers. Capa invited her to join the group, and she became its first American woman member. Her mastery of the colour processes and techniques popular in the 50s was extensive and assured, although she worked for preference in black-and-white...

Martin Parr
While we are on the photography stint, you may be interested to know that photographer Martin Parr will be exhibited at the Rocket Gallery in celebration of his achievements including his prolific output of over sixty photography books since 1974.

Saul Leiter
Going back in time a little to one of my favourites, and most of you will already know Mr.Saul Leiter.
Benedict Redgrove
Having recently seen Wired's latest auto shoot, confirmed yet again Benedict Redgrove's dominance as a purveyor of auto-erotic photography.
Lee Mawdsley
Up next, Lee Mawdsley, another O-L favourite, who has a few new projects up. As always great stuff.
Greg White
Moving further away from the fashion scene now and closer to landscape and still life photography, it's always worth gazing upon Greg White's tip top work.
Mert & Marcus
Following on from Jon; today's fashion dream team known as Mert (Alas) & Marcus (Piggott), (currently represented by Art Partner).
Like many fashion photographers they seem to have been heavily influenced by the legendary Guy Bourdin, and as a duo, they are said to have defined the look of the past decade, highlighted along the way with their powerful depictions of strong women. They are one of the most respected and acclaimed photographers working today and, as you would imagine, they have created some of the most iconic editorial pieces of recent times as well as a long list of high profile advertising projects under their Louis Vuitton belts!
Most recently, however, they have just completed a series of sexy covers (one shown above) for Love magazine.
Jon Compson
I realise there has been a distinct lack of photography features on here, so I will remedy that firstly by introducing fashion and beauty photographer, Jon Compson, who recently dropped me a line.
Jon started off assisting some of the biggest photographers of the time, such as Nick Knight, David Sims, Mert and Marcus and eventually took a full time position with Solve Sundsbo, who he remained with for four years.
As you will see from his accomplished portfolio, he is now one of the leading creatives of his craft. His editorial commissions include, Harpers Bazaar, iD, Gloss, GQ, Exit and Wonderland. He has also shot advertising campaigns for clients such as Givenchy, Lancome, Clarins, Covergirl, Kerastase, Thierry Mugler, Pantene, Aveda, Fauchon, Pepsi and Boots No7.
On a side note, known to the very few, Jon, along with photographer Matthew Eades, is also famed for originating one of the most viral photography techniques ever. ;-) Answers on a postcard.

Attik
Haven't mentioned Attik agency for quite some time, so let's check out their latest work with the recent rebranding of the IGN Entertainment group and interactive work for Lexus.

Er... I'm already professional!?
Ok so this is interesting if not a bit odd:
"The Chartered Society of Designers has filed an application to the UK Government to approve a system of professional certification for designers.
A much-needed step toward elevating design's status? Or an expensive irrelevance?"
Well, if it worked there would be admittedly a few benefits, but it just seems a little ridiculous as I really can't see the top designers, design groups or clients for that matter, suddenly warming to this...

AisleOne
It may be worth mentioning that Antonio Carusone, with the help of Emil Olsson, has refreshed the ever minimal AisleOne Blog. The site has some nice touches in there such as keyboard navigation, a dashboard and 2 different viewing options; list view (a la Original-Linkage) or an abbreviated grid view.
So well done chaps!
To my shame, O-L's design hasn't changed since 2004!! One day, I too may even get round to refreshing the site, but then, would it lose it's old-school cool?!
Xavier Lanau
Got a nice email from Barcelona based designer, Xavier Lanau, who is now a new O-L reader and not only that, he has some pretty good work to show too. Take a look!
